WOODVILLE — If the WCCA Rams hope to make it to the playoffs, they need to pull off a big win on the road against the Cenla Christian Academy Lions Friday night.
“We are still in the hunt for the playoffs,” WCCA head coach Sam Byrd IV said. “We have to continue winning and wait to see how things unfold.”
The Rams pulled out a nail biter last week defeating Riverdale 14-7.
“We had some guys go down during the game last week,” Byrd said. “We were missing blocks and didn’t score in places where we should have.”
The Rams only offensive touchdown came on a 48-yard, Todd Gonda pass to Cody Cullen in the third quarter.
“We have been working on our blocking assignments this week,” Byrd said.
WCCA will face a Cenla team that has had its ups and downs this season.
The highest coming on Sept. 14 when they beat, then highly ranked, Glenbrook 42-31.
The lowest, the week after when four coaches were dismissed which included head coach Matt Middleton.
Since then CCA has dropped three games in a row and a number of players have transferred to other schools.
“It’s been a learning process with the new coach,” Byrd said. “They are still a good team.”
Byrd said CCA runs a different type of offense than what they are used to seeing.
“They spread it out and try to isolate you,” Byrd said. “They tend to run ball more than pass.”
He said his defense would have to make good tackles and not get so aggressive to over run plays.
“We’ve been working on our open field tackling,” Byrd said. “Our defense does a good job staying at home and not over pursuing fakes.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
