VIDALIA — In the state house and senate races, one local man is in a runoff while another kept his hold onto his seat.

Senatorial District 32

With 42 percent of the vote, Ferriday resident and current Secretary of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Bryant Hammett Jr., a Democrat, will have to face Columbia resident Republican Neil Riser, who had 49 percent of the vote, in the Nov. 17 runoff.

Michael Trent, Democrat, of Clarks, finished the election with 9 percent of the vote.

House District 21

With 69 of 70 precincts reporting, incumbent Rep. Andy Anders, of Clayton, kept his hold on the house seat for District 21 with 62 percent of the vote, followed by C. Travis Johnson, of Ferriday, with 16 percent, Moses J. Williams, of Tallulah, with 16 percent and Richard Madison, of Ferriday, with 6 percent.

Senatorial District 34

Of the three candidates in the race for the 34th Senatorial District’s seat, former Rep. Francis Thompson, of Delhi, carried the race with 51 percent of the vote with 141 of 142 precincts reporting.

Thompson was followed by Rep. Willie Hunter, of Monroe, who had 41 percent of the vote and Paxton J. Branch, of Tallulah, who had 8 percent of the vote.
