NATCHEZ — It’s going to be a dogfight tonight when the 4-4 Natchez Bulldogs host the 4-4 Terry Bulldogs.
A win against Terry could put Natchez in good shape to get into the playoffs.
“We are tied with Terry and Wingfield for the fourth spot,” Natchez head coach Lance Reed said. “We have to continue to win.”
Natchez has won its last two games with the biggest being last week’s 63-0 rout over Jim Hill.
“Our run game has really picked up,” Reed said. “Willie Newman and Travis Woods have turned it on.”
Reed said the reason for the sudden boost to the run has been execution.
“We are executing much better than we did at the start of the season,” he said. “We have a solid group on the offensive line.”
Terry’s head coach Bill French said stopping the run was their biggest concern.
“We haven’t been able to stop the run all season,” French said. “We have to get better at it.”
Terry has lost their last two games by a combined score of 54-14.
“We haven’t been playing well,” French said. “Injuries have hurt us all year.”
The biggest blow to their depth chart was the lost of starting running back Deshun Dixon who is out for the season with a broken leg.
“We’re just hoping to keep it close till the fourth quarter,” French said.
Reed said Terry still had plenty of playmakers to go to.
“Rashun Dixon is a Dandy Dozen receiver,” Reed said. “Their quarterback Clark Shearer and running back Jarrett Johnson can make plays.”
Reed said their main goal was to stop the run and not allow the big plays.
“It’s harder for a team to drive the whole field without making a mistake,” Reed said.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
