What a glorious event the Phatwater Kayak Challenge is, was and will be for Natchez — and what a great way to rediscover Natchez and the Mighty Mississippi.

I had heard of this event and toyed with the idea of attending last year but dallied too long. My pleasure attending this year knows no bounds, and it has kindled a love for Natchez as a town that now bridges past and present.

As a prideful Mississippian who has lived in a number of other places, I have heard and felt the barbs about the South and our state as being stagnant and “stuck” in the past.

No more.

The important history of Natchez and the Mississippi River is now joined to the present and future.

The participants and attendees with whom I conversed this past weekend indicate the Phatwater Kayak Challenge as a valuable resource not just for tourism, but for growth.

The diverse locations from whence these people came for this occasion is impressive, and by promoting the Mississippi River as more than a major artery for commercial transportation, this event promotes Natchez as a center of activity for physically healthy sports. I, for one, will certainly return to your charming city — and not just for the Phatwater.

However, I will definitely be present for all future Phatwater Kayak Challenges. This wonderful activity should be broadcast across the country. It’s simply great fun!
