CLINTON, La. — Even though football season came to an end a little earlier than expected for Trinity Episcopal, its transition to varsity boys basketball started off very well.

Thanks to a 21-point second quarter and some tough defense in the second half, the Saints defeated the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 61-38 Tuesday night at the Silliman Tournament.

R.J. Fleming led nine Saints players in scoring with 14 points and Matthew Freeman added 12 points. Oak Forest was led by Justin Hatcher with 13 points.

Trinity trailed Oak Forest 18-15 after one quarter of play, but after that it was all Saints. They outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 36-29 halftime lead and then allowed just nine total points after the break, including two points in the third quarter.

The Saints continue action at the Silliman Tournament today when they take on Central Private at 7:45 p.m.

Cathedral boys 48, Grace Christian 45

NATCHEZ — In a game that was close the entire way, the Green Wave rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat a very good Warriors team Tuesday night to improve to 4-1.

Juan Gray was double-teamed several times throughout the game, yet still scored 18 points to lead Cathedral and did a good job finding the open teammates.

Cathedral’s win was keyed by its switch to a man-to-man defense with about five and a half minutes in the game and the Green Wave still trailing. Grace Christian was held without a field goal and made just three free throws the rest of the way.

“We were real aggressive playing denial defense and caused a lot of problems,” Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said.

The Green Wave also got key baskets from Charles Lee, who had nine points, and Jamerson Jones, who finished with seven points, in the fourth quarter.

“Charles hit a big three early in the quarter that gave us the lead and then he hit another basket,” Arnold said. “Nobody got more than five points ahead in the game. They’re a good team. They’re well coached.”

The Warriors used a 1-3-1 and a box-and-1 defense on Gray, but it didn’t seem to bother him too much.

“We were trying to be patient. He doesn’t force too many shots and gets it to the open man,” Arnold said about Gray. “We were real sluggish early in the game coming off the holiday break.”

Sean Smith led Grace Christian (16-4) with 17 points and Jeremy Fontenot had 12 points.

Natchez High boys 70, Jefferson County 66 (OT)

FAYETTE — Even though Jefferson County got a combined 54 points from Kadon Day and Percy Turner, the Tigers could not hold on to a seven-point halftime lead and wound up losing to the Bulldogs in overtime.

Natchez High (5-3) overcame a 19-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter and a 35-28 lead at halftime to escape with the win. The Bulldogs began their comeback in the second quarter and then outscored the Tigers 30-23 in the second half to force overtime. In the overtime period, Natchez High outscored Jefferson County 12-8.

Day all scorers with 28 points and Turner had 26 points for the Tigers. Natchez High was led by Kendall Logan with 20 points, followed by Dejuan Hughes with 18 points and James Reed with 10 points.

Natchez High girls 76, Jefferson County 44

FAYETTE — The Lady Bulldogs opened up a close game by outscoring the Lady Tigers 26-15 in the second quarter and rolled to an impressive 32-point win on the road to remain undefeated.

The Lady Bulldogs, now 8-0 on the season, put the game completely out of reach with a 24-10 advantage in the third quarter to take a 62-36 lead into the fourth quarter. This after leading just 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Alia Frank led Natchez High with a game-high 23 points and Koesha Bradley had 15 points. C. White led Jefferson County with 17 points and S. Queen added 12 points.

Wilkinson County boys 53, McComb 36

WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County’s offense may have been sluggish at times in the first half, but its defense was outstanding as the Wildcats cruised to a 17-point win over the Tigers Tuesday night.

Corey Anthony led Wilkinson County with a game-high 21 points. Kenny Harden added 13 points and Megal Covington chipped in with 11 points for the Wildcats, who held McComb to eight points in the first half en route to a 23-8 halftime lead.

The Tigers were led by M. Thompson with 17 points, but he was the only McComb player to score in double digits.

Ferriday girls 87, Franklin Parish 61

WINNSBORO, La. — Jasmine Upchurch scored a career-high 42 points to lead the Lady Trojans past the Lady Patriots Tuesday night to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Upchurch led four Lady Trojans in double figures in the lopsided win. Jasmine Butler had 14 points, Atasia Banks had 13 points and Chante Poole chipped in with 12 points. Ferriday led by just four points at the end of the first quarter, but pulled away by outscoring Franklin Parish a combined 45-27 over the next two quarters.

Jasmine Whitley scored 26 points to lead the Lady Patriots while Kale Scott had 15 points and Jasmine Jones had 14 points.

Parklane girls 66, ACCS 28

MCCOMB — Caitlyn Adams scored a game-high 24 points as the Lady Pioneers jumped out to a 26-6 lead over the Lady Rebels after one quarter of play and never looked back

Maggie Jackson and Lindsey Clark added 13 points each for Parklane, which outscored ACCS (1-6) in each of the four quarters. Rachel Holloway led the Lady Rebels with 10 points and Marlee Wadsworth had seven points.

Vidalia girls 49, Sicily Island 15

VIDALIA — Wins have been hard to come by for the Lady Vikings over the last several seasons, but perhaps they are finally going in the right direction. Tuesday night’s 34-point win over the Lady Tigers may have been proof of that.

Vidalia outscored Sicily Island 20-0 in the second quarter to take an impressive 29-2 halftime lead and never looked back. Tyeshia Rogers led the Lady Vikings with 20 points and Rachel Wagoner had 18 points.

Ferriday boys 54, Franklin Parish 49

WINNSBORO, La. — An up-and-down first half by Ferriday ended up with the Trojans trailing the Patriots by four points at halftime. Montrell Tennessee made sure that wouldn’t last.

Tennessee scored a game-high 25 points as the Trojans, thanks to a 14-7 edge in the third quarter, rallied to defeat Franklin Parish to even their season record at 2-2. Alrion McKeel also had a big game in the come-from-behind win as he finished with 13 points.

Things didn’t look good for Ferriday after being held to just five points in the second quarter to fall behind at the half. But the Trojans were able to regain the momentum in the third quarter. Brandon Sims led the Patriots with 22 points.

Trinity Episcopal girls 37, Oak Forest 32

CLINTON, La. — After being held to single digits in each of the first two quarters, the Lady Saints turned to their defense to rally in the second half and defeat the Lady Yellow Jackets at the Silliman Tournament Tuesday night.

The Lady Saints turned a three-point halftime deficit into a four-point lead by the end of the third quarter. They were lucky that Oak Forest wasn’t able to take advantage of their poor shooting in the first half.

Molly Butts led Trinity with a game-high 13 points. Lindsey Oliver led Oak Forest with nine points. The Lady Saints take on Central Private as play continues at the Silliman Tournament today at 6:30 p.m.

Block girls 45, Jena 35

JONESVILLE, La. — After being outscored 13-4 in the first quarter by a Lady Giants team looking for their first win of the season, the Lady Bears made sure the visitors from Jena would stay winless Tuesday night.

Block (3-3) cut into the lead in the second quarter to trail by four points, 20-16, at halftime. The Lady Bears then took the lead for good in the third quarter and took a 28-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

Arnesha Beard led Block with 15 points while Shateca Collins had 11 points and Desiree Savage added 10 points. A. Jenkins led Jena with 15 points and S. Hunter had 10 points.

Grace Christian girls 50, Cathedral 44

NATCHEZ — Abbie Treuett lit up the Lady Green Wave for 33 points as she helped the Lady Warriors from Alexandria, La. to a closer-than-expected six-point win Tuesday night.

Grace Christian (6-10) jumped out to what appeared to be a commanding 32-15 lead at halftime. However, Cathedral (0-5) made the game interesting in the fourth quarter by scoring 19 points. Unfortunately, the rally came up a bit short. Kristan Dobard led the Lady Green Wave with 14 points.

“We missed 19 free throws. We could tell we haven’t done anything since before the Thanksgiving holiday,” Lady Green Wave head coach Kathy Graning said. “We were rusty. But we played well in the second half.”

LaSalle boys 55, Monterey 45

MONTEREY, La. — The third quarter seems to be the one quarter that the Wolves would rather not play as they were outscored 13-5 and ended up losing to the Tigers by 10 points Tuesday night.

Billy Metcalf led Monterey (2-11) with 16 points and Beau Shivley had 11 points. Magee (no first name given) led LaSalle with a game-high 21 points.

LaSalle girls 47, Monterey 22

MONTEREY, La. — B. Johnson ended up outscoring the Lady Wolves by herself as she finished with 23 points in leading the Lady Tigers to a big win Tuesday night.

Madison Simpson led the Lady Wolves (2-11) with 10 points. H. Guin chipped with 17 points for LaSalle.
