Officer David Washington was on duty, but not on a call at approximately 8 p.m. when his vehicle struck that of Darnell Woods downtown.
The officer was traveling south on Martin Luther King Jr. Street, and Woods was driving a Honda Accord east on State Street.
The two cars collided in the intersection.
Woods was removed with the jaws of life and transported to the hospital. He was awaiting transport to University Medical Center in Jackson Tuesday night. He was alert, but suffered fractures, Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
Washington was treated and released from the hosptial.
