FERRIDAY — The Adams County Christian girls basketball team has gone through a lot this season. Youth, inexperience and a mid-season coaching change have left the group searching for wins.
However, Friday evening they put together their best performance of the season to capture a 27-23 win over the Huntington Lady Hounds in Ferriday.
“We played solid defense and didn’t give away things,” Lady Rebels coach Paul Hayles said. “Our offense did a much better job of getting good shots and creating seperation.”
After ending the first quarter tied at six, the Lady Rebels (3-10) took their first lead of the night when Sara Fuller hit a jumper in the lane to put ACCS up 10-8 early in the second quarter. They would never trail again.
The halftime score was 14-10 in favor of the Lady Rebels and ACCS expanded its lead to as much as nine points on a Fuller basket early in the fourth quarter to put ACCS up 24-15.
However, the Lady Hounds (7-10) would not go away quietly.
Huntington mounted a comeback in the final period, scoring six straight points to cut the margin to 24-21 when Donna Tarver canned two free throws with 4:28 left.
The Lady Hounds had numerous chances to tie the game or take the lead in the fourth quarter as ACCS went over five minutes without scoring a point.
Huntington missed several three-pointers during that time span which would have tied the score.
Fuller finally broke the Lady Rebels’ scoring drought with two free throws with 1:56 remaining to give ACCS a 26-21 lead.
Fuller hit another free throw with 38 seconds remaining to salt the game away.
Rachel Holloway led ACCS with eight points while Fuller finished with seven and Chelsea Freeman had six.
Huntington was led by Donna Tarver with eight points.
Emilee Johns made a basket for Huntington with 17 seconds left but it was too little, too late.
Hayles said the win was a testament to the hard work of the players.
“We’ve made a big push trying to teach them the fundamentals and love of the game,” Hayles said. “They’re a young team and it’s a good feeling to watch them grow up on the court.”

The Huntington Hounds used offensive rebounding to their advantage and took an eight-point win over the Rebels.
The Hounds dominated the boards all game long and four offensive rebound putbacks by Tyler Pere` in the fourth quarter salted away the win.
“Those were some big putbacks of missed shots,” Huntington coach David Boydstun said. “The key to the game was our offensive rebounding. We got on the boards pretty good tonight.”
Huntington led 15-12 at halftime and extended the lead to 27-20 after three quarters.
ACCS closed the gap to 28-24 early in the fourth quarter but Huntington pulled away after that thanks to free throws and Pere`’s putbacks.
Pere` led the Hounds (3-9) with 15 points while Kevin Brown had 13 and Chuck Bowie tallied eight.
ACCS (1-10) was led by Phillip Breland with eight points. Luke Brumfield and Lee Swinney both had seven points in the loss.
