WOODVILLE — WCCA looked to be hopelessly behind Thursday night, trailing Central Private by 20 points late in the first half.
But like their namesake, the stubborn Rams wouldn’t quit and came roaring back in the second half to take a stunning 49-46 win.
“We challenged them at halftime to go out and play in the second half,” WCCA coach Ray Olive said. “We were very sloppy in the first half and were out-hustled. But we stepped it up and played hard in the second half.”
The Rams (9-6) trailed 26-13 at halftime but outscored Central Private 16-8 in the third period to cut the lead to 34-29.
The Rams’ comeback continued in the fourth quarter and they finally took the lead on a pair of George Davis free throws.
Trumaine Norwood hit two more free throws to expand the lead to three in the final seconds and Central Private couldn’t hit a shot to tie the game as the clock ran out.
“We took control in the last few minutes,” Olive said. “We hit some big free throws down the stretch.”
Olive said he didn’t make any adjustments at halftime, but just challenged the team to play harder, which they did.
“I’m very proud of the way they came back in the second half,” Olive said.
Todd Gonda led the way for the Rams with 15 points while Norwood scored 10, including six in the fourth quarter. Chris Houghton added eight points.
Central Private was led by Josh Sides with 13 points and Jeff Martrain with nine.

While the WCCA boys came back from a halftime deficit to win, the Lady Rams let a halftime lead of their own slip away in a loss Thursday night.
The Lady Rams led 19-17 at intermission, but were outscored 32-11 in the second half.
Hannah Ashley led WCCA with 13 points while Emma Benton had nine and Sam Pace tallied six.
Central Private was led by Jade Pierce with 15 points and Tricia Veenendaal with 14.
WCCA falls to 6-11 on the season.
