NATCHEZ — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has ordered an autopsy for a woman deputies discovered dead in her Linden Drive residence.
Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said the woman, who he described as elderly, likely died of natural causes. He said his office ordered the autopsy to confirm no foul play occurred because of some suspicious evidence at the scene.
Deputies arrived at the house of the woman, who Mayfield said he could not identify until her family is notified, in response to a call from a concerned neighbor who had not seen her recently.
Mayfield said deputies discovered the woman dead on her bed with no evidence of a struggle or signs of foul play. She appeared to have been dead for approximately two days, and a dog was barking inside the house.
The front door was locked, however, deputies reported that the house’s back door was cracked suspiciously ajar and a windowpane was missing from a back window.
In addition, Mayfield said deputies noticed some items that appeared to be from the woman’s purse were scattered outside of the purse.
Mayfield said it looked as though the purse and its contents had been moved around.
No valuable items appeared to be missing to investigators knowledge and the house showed no signs of being ransacked.
“There was no actual sign of foul play, it was just suspicious,” Mayfield said.
Mayfield said the case will be closed if the autopsy, which takes approximately one week to be completed, reveals the woman died of natural causes.
“There is no cause for alarm in the (Linden Drive) neighborhood,” Mayfield said. “There’s no reason to believe anybody is in danger.”
