NATCHEZ — The Lake Montrose Volunteer Fire Department will soon be equipped as an emergency shelter for Adams County.
The station received a $33,250 grant, which will be used to purchase a permanently mounted generator, Adams County Emergency Management Director Stan Owens said.
“The generator would be able to keep that station running 24/7 if a power outage occurs,” Owens said. “It would give us a sustainable facility to house people or operations during an emergency, if needed.”
Back during Hurricane Katrina, Owens said the Kingston Fire Station was used for a similar purpose because it has a fixed-site generator in place.
Owens said he still has to bid the instillation of a generator.
“We are just excited to receive this grant award, but the true work has yet to be done,” Owens said.
The grant money is through FEMA, and is awarded to help fire departments improve their emergency response capabilities.
