NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal didn’t have to wait until the second quarter to pull away from Chamberlain-Hunt like it did on Monday night against Centreville Academy.

Instead, the Saints’ offense got rolling soon after the opening tip and they never looked back as the No. 2 ranked team in all of Class AA rolled to an impressive 83-52 win over the Chamberlain-Hunt Wildcats Tuesday night at Clyde Adams Arena.

Matthew Freeman led all scorers with 23 points while Andrew Johnson had 17 points and Parker Brumfield made three three-pointers on his way to scoring 14 points. Brandon Daggs led the Saints’ defense with nine steals.

Trinity, now 15-3 overall and 3-0 in MPSA District 3-AA, scored 24 points in the first quarter while holding Chamberlain-Hunt to just 11 points. By halftime the Saints had enjoyed a commanding 44-23 lead.

The Wildcats’ offense got going in the third quarter as they scored 19 points, but their defense couldn’t slow down the Saints and were unable to get back in the game.

Dane Rickels led Chamberlain-Hunt with 19 points and David Hahn finished with 11 points.

Monterey 36, Claiborne Christian 27

MONTEREY — Thanks to an 11-2 advantage in the third quarter, Monterey turned a two-point halftime lead into an double-digit lead as the Wolves won just their fourth game of the season.

Monterey (4-18) got off to a slow start offensively and was tied with Claiborne Christian at 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. But once the Wolves had the lead at halftime, they didn’t give it back.

Beau Shivley led the Wolves with a game-high 15 points. A. Keekee led the Crusaders with nine points.

Ferriday 61, Jonesboro-Hodge 59

FERRIDAY — Ferriday pretty much controlled the game for most of the first three quarters and took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter. Then the Trojans almost saw their lead vanish completely, but they held on to defeat the Tigers in District 2-2A action Tuesday night.

Ferriday (16-6, 3-0) jumped out to a 20-14 lead over Jonesboro-Hodge at the end of the first quarter and then led at halftime 39-27. The Tigers were only able to cut one point into the Trojans’ lead in the third quarter.

“It wasn’t really close until the fourth quarter. We nearly let it slip away from us,” Ferriday head coach K.G. Watkins said.

Montrell Tennessee led Ferriday with 22 points. Joshua Upchurch had 15 points and Matthew Smith added 13 points. Dave Ellington led the Tigers with 15 points and Trey Burkes chipped in with 13 points.

WCCA 57, Tensas Academy 45

WOODVILLE — Tensas Academy had no answer for WCCA’s Todd Gonda, who scored a season-high 34 points as the Rams defeated the Chiefs Tuesday night in District 6-A action.

WCCA (11-9, 3-1) dominated the first quarter on both ends of the court en route to a 23-7 lead. Tensas (1-3 in District 6-A) tried to get back in the game in the second quarter, but to no avail. The Rams then put the game away with a 15-7 advantage in the third quarter.

Trumaine Norwood scored 11 points for the Rams. Hunter Hale led the Chiefs with 17 points.

West Lincoln 47, Cathedral 45 (OT)

BROOKHAVEN — West Lincoln went with a sound strategy – let Juan Gray score his points and see if someone else for Cathedral could step up. Unfortunately for the Green Wave, that didn’t happen Tuesday night as they fell to the Bears in overtime with first place in Region 8-1A on the line.

Gray led Cathedral with 29 points, but no other Green Wave player ended up in double figures. In fact, the next leading scorer was Charles Lee with six points. And yet the Green Wave had a chance to win the game in regulation.

“It was a grind-it-out defensive battle. We had to earn every point,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. We missed two free throws. They scored in the last second to tie it and send it to overtime. It was a great game.”

West Lincoln (12-5, 6-0) won the game by outscoring Cathedral (16-4, 5-1) 5-3 in the overtime period. Aaron Collins led the Bears with 14 points and Jeremy Richardson had 10 points.

Natchez High 53, Warren Central 46

VICKSBURG — Dwong Hughes scored 16 points and James Reed had 12 points as the Bulldogs held on for a seven-point win on the road over the Vikings Tuesday night.

Natchez High (11-8) took an early 17-10 lead, but Warren Central chipped away at the led and found itself trailing by just three points by the end of the third quarter. But the Bulldogs put a stop to the rally by outscoring the Vikings 15-11 in the fourth quarter.

Dino Harris finished with 18 points and Jeremy Smith added 13 points to lead Warren Central.

Wilkinson County 68, South Pike 55

WOODVILLE — After and up-and-down first half, the Wildcats got back on track in the second half in defeating the Eagles Tuesday night in Region 7-3A action.

Wilkinson County scored 23 points in the first quarter and had an 11-point lead. But South Pike completely eliminated that lead by outscoring the Wildcats 19-8 in the second quarter and by halftime the score was tied at 31-31.

However, the Wildcats wouldn’t let one bad quarter get in the way. They outscored the Eagles 20-11 in the third quarter and 17-13 in the fourth quarter. Corey Anthony led all scorers with 31 points and Kenny Harden had 21 points to lead Wilkinson County.

D. Malone and L. Jones scored 17 points each to lead South Pike and C. Campbell added 11 points.
