NATCHEZ — The ACCS Rebels celebrated Senior Night Tuesday, but the Riverfield Raiders made sure the Rebel seniors wouldn’t go out with a win.

Riverfield used an inside advantage to pull away from ACCS in the second half en route to a 63-46 win.

The Rebels kept it close early in the game, trailing only by two points before Riverfield’s Logan Moore hit a 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer to make the score 13-8.

ACCS closed to within 21-17 in the second quarter before Riverfield closed the half on a 13-7 run and went into the break with a 34-24 lead.

Foul trouble and lack of depth caught up with the Rebels in the second half, as Riverfield extended its lead in the second half.

They led by as many as 19 points before ACCS made a small run to cut into the lead in the final minutes.

ACCS coach Rick Fife said the Rebels hung in the game early thanks to tough inside play, but when their big men got into foul trouble, Riverfield took advantage.

“We rebounded the ball well early, which allowed us some easy offense,” Fife said. “But the big guys got in foul trouble in the first half and that had a lot to do with the outcome.”

Fife was pleased with the effort of his team however, especially his four seniors, Dustin Carroll, Phillip Breland, Luke Brumfield and Duncan Guedon.

“That’s one of the better games this year we’ve played as a team,” Fife said. “The seniors really came out and played well. I started the four seniors for the first time and they really played well.”

Fife said he would be sad to see his senior players leave the program.

“Our seniors are leaving this program in better shape than when they came,” Fife said. “They played hard and gave effort above and beyond.”

Breland and Brumfield led ACCS with 10 points apiece while Lee Swinney had nine.

Riverfield was led by J.T. Davis with 15 and Moore with 13.

Riverfield girls 53, ACCS 34

The ACCS girls hung close for one quarter, but fell far behind in the second and third quarters in a 19-point loss to the Lady Raiders.

Riverfield outscored the Lady Rebels 30-15 in the second and third quarters to turn a close game into a runaway.

Three-point shooting played a big part in Riverfield’s win.

“They’re 3-point shooting really separated them from us,” ACCS coach Paul Hayles said. “They had two girls that shot a high percentage and that was a big difference.”

Sara Beth Fuller led ACCS with 16 points while Marlee Wadsworth scored nine and Chelsea Freeman had six.

Riverfield was led by Kelsey Cheek with 17 points and Claudia Williams with 12.
