NATCHEZ — It wasn’t that pretty of a game, but it was a district win nonetheless for the Cathedral Lady Wave.
The Lady Wave pulled out to a big lead and coasted to the finish line in a 47-34 win over Resurrection Thursday afternoon.
The game had an early 2 p.m. start time due to the long trip Resurrection had to make from Pascagoula.
Cathedral jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and led 24-8 at halftime.
The Lady Wave extended their lead to 39-16 after three quarters, but were outscored 18-8 in the fourth quarter, which was something coach Kathy Graning wasn’t happy about.
“That wasn’t a pretty game,” Graning said. “We gave up too many easy shots and missed too many free throws. I don’t know if it was starting early or what.”
Graning also was less than pleased with the way Resurrection’s Iris Hartman was able to dominate in the post. She finished with a game-high 25 points.
“She pretty much had her way with us,” Graning said. “We didn’t do as good a job defensively tonight as we did the other night against Salem.”
Kristian Dobard led Cathedral with 20 points. No one else scored more than six.
Cathedral (12-14, 7-4 Region 8-1A) will play their final region game tonight against West Lincoln.
Graning said the team will have to have a much better effort in order to pull out the victory.
“If we play like this against West Lincoln, it’s going to be a long night,” she said.
However, despite the sloppy play, Graning was just happy to collect another win in the district.
“Nobody looks at anything but a W,” Graning said. “They don’t look at how you got there. We’ll take it anyway we can get it.”
Cathedral boys 56, Resurrection 32
Cathedral coach Peter Arnold has been sick with the flu this week and watching parts of his team’s game against Resurrection didn’t make him feel much better.
However, the Wave strung enough good play together to take a 24-point win over the Eagles Thursday afternoon.
“We started off pretty good, but then the game just got real ugly,” Arnold said. “We sometimes tend to play down to the level of our competition. We jumped out to a lead and then got lackadaisical.”
Cathedral jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter, but outscored Resurrection only by five points over the next two quarters and took a 39-23 lead into the fourth.
However, they put the game away in the final quarter, outscoring the Eagles 17-9.
Cathedral’s Juan Gray led all scorers with 26 points while Skylar Bacon added 10 for the Wave.
Resurrection was led by Trey Anderson with 14 points.
With the win, the Green Wave (21-5, 9-2) clinched second place in Region 8-1A.
They face region champion West Lincoln, whom they lost to in overtime earlier this season, tonight.
“It’s a big game for us,” Arnold said. “Even though we can’t catch West Lincoln for first place, we would still like to beat them.”
