District 6-AA second seed to be decided by playoff

CENTREVILLE — Controversy continued to surround which team will eventually be the No. 2 seed out of MAIS District 6-AA for the Class AA South State Tournament — Centreville Academy or Oak Forest Academy.

Centreville head coach Mark Mann said the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools interpreted the rules one way and that he interpreted them another way.

He thought the Lady Tigers should automatically advance to South State because they own the tiebreaker over the Lady Yellow Jackets. Both teams finished with a 6-2 record in district play.

But during the district meeting held Thursday morning, nothing was settled. The other three teams in District 6-AA — district champion Silliman Institute, Central Private School and Bowling Green School — could not come to a decision.

So the only way this will be settled is on the softball field.

Centreville and Oak Forest will play each other at noon today at Silliman in a one-game playoff. The winner will take on District 4-AA champion Simpson Academy in a South State first-round game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Timberton Park in Hattiesburg, while the loser will have its season come to an abrupt end.

Games 1 through 7 of the Class AA South State Tournament will be at Timberton Park on Saturday and Games 8, 9, 10 and, if necessary, 11 will take place on Monday at Columbia Academy’s softball field.
