VIDALIA — Some voters were confused by the closed party primaries in Saturday’s elections, but otherwise everything went off without a hitch.

“We had a few problems when we first started because people didn’t realize they couldn’t cross party lines,” Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber said.

Some voters were confused because of Louisiana’s open primaries, in which voters can vote across party lines in state-level and U.S. Congressional elections, Webber said.

Saturday’s presidential preference elections were closed because they were for the Democratic or Republican party nominations, not for the national election.

The electronic voting machines the state uses has lockouts so that if a voter is a registered Democrat, even though the Republican ticket may appear on the machine, they can only vote Democrat, Webber said.

“We had four or five people who walked out because they couldn’t vote for who they wanted to,” he said.

Other than that, everything ran smoothly, he said.

“The returns came in early, we turned them in early and everything worked out well,” Webber said.
