WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County High School knows which two players to look out for when it hosts Ferriday High School Friday night.

From looking at film against Ferriday’s win against Vidalia High School last week, Wildcats (2-2) head coach Kenneth Brown said the Trojans like to get the ball in the hands of No. 4, Richard Jefferson, and No. 20, Jarvis Brooks.

“Their quarterback (Jefferson) and their running back (Brooks) are very good athletes,” Brown said. “No. 20 and No. 4 seem to be the workhorses, and they look like they’d prefer (those two) handling most of the load.”

Brown also said Ferriday’s offensive line did some good things in the game against Vidalia.

“They’re line is pretty sharp and strong, and they look to be aggressive as well. They look pretty good on film.”

Despite the win, Ferriday (2-1) head coach Richard Oliver said his team still had plenty of things to work on this week in practice.

“We’re just trying to get better,” Oliver said. “We have a tough game coming up against a team that looks pretty decent.”

In particular, Oliver said Wilkinson County’s athleticism will be a challenge when his Trojans take the field Friday.

“They have athletes all over the field,” Oliver said. “They’re pretty big, and they look to be pretty physical. Their quarterback (Devin Voorhies) could give us some problems here and there. They have some receivers that can catch, and they look pretty big up front.”

Although Wilkinson County’s season began two weeks before Ferriday’s, the Wildcats have only played one more game than the Trojans thanks to the Wildcats having a bye week in week three of the MHSAA season. Even with the Wildcats having a few more weeks under their belts, Oliver said he doesn’t expect the extra game to make too much of an impact on Friday’s outcome.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I know in our first game against Natchez High, that was a big thing. We had just come off of two quarters, and they had come off of two complete games.

“Now that we have three games under our belts, I don’t think that will be as much of an issues as far as game experience.”

With Wilkinson County being just more than an hour away, Oliver said the lack of long distance was good for his team, even with his players being the ones that have to travel.

“Time can be your friend or your worst enemy,” Oliver said. “Traveling far is a factor in how you get ready. I think time is a factor for all things in life, because life is time-driven.”

Brown said he’s glad the Wildcats will be hosting a team that’s not too far from Woodville.

“You have a better opportunity to improve your home crowd, for one thing,” Brown said. “Baker brought a lot of people last week, and from talking to Ferriday, they’re saying they’ll do the same thing.

“They’ll be coming full force, and we used to play them years ago, and it was the same back then.”
