While politicians bickered, grandstanded and stalled in recent years the local business community, often led by the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce, has been moving mountains one tiny stone at a time.

The chamber picked up a new rock Monday night, and this could certainly be the biggest mountain around — public education.

The chamber’s education committee invited members of the Natchez Board of Aldermen, Adams County Board of Supervisors, Natchez Inc. Board and Natchez-Adams School Board to come to the table to address concerns with the public schools.

A long-time local leader said no such meeting had ever occurred in town.

Wow. Must we wonder why the schools continue to struggle?

When politicians and businessmen drive by local schools daily, complain and hear complaints often but never come to the table to talk, it’s obvious that troubles will persist.

Natchez has been walking around the mountain, when it needs to be moved.

The first rock has been hoisted, and many more remain.

We commend the chamber and all who attended the meeting for taking an important step to bettering our great community.

Our children will reap the benefits.
