Rebels take victory over Rams

NATCHEZ — Even though Dustin Carroll was pitching a good game for Adams County Christian School, the Rebels went into the bottom of the third inning trailing Wilkinson County Christian Academy 3-1.

Finally, Carroll got the run support he needed as the Rebels scored four runs in the bottom of the third and went on to defeat the Rams 8-5 Friday night to improve to 2-1 on the season.

“We had four errors in that inning. That extended the inning for them,” WCCA head coach Ray Olive said. “In between those they had a home run and a couple of key hits. That was the difference in the game.”

Even with that big inning, ACCS still needed a couple of key innings to eventually pull away from a pesky WCCA team. The Rebels were only up one run until they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-4 game.

“The offense is starting to come together for us. We’re coming around as a team,” ACCS first-year head coach Hunter McKeivier said. “We’re gelling a good bit. We expect big things from these kids.”

After allowing those three early runs, Carroll settled down and gave up just two runs the rest of the way. Carroll’s pitching, as well as some timely hitting (ACCS had 14 hits in the game), were the keys to the Rebels’ win.

“Carroll pitched a heck of a game,” McKeivier said. “He threw outs for us. He’s a senior who shined tonight.”

Olive added that if the Rams could have gotten out of the bottom of the third inning unscathed, they would have had a good chance of winning the game.

“We played well enough to win. We played it all the way through thinking we still had a chance,” Olive said. “Carroll pitched well. He kept us off-balanced. We hit the ball well, but several of them were right at them or their centerfielder made some great catches that kept us from having extra-base hits.”

Leading the way at the plate for ACCS were T.J. Johnson and Hunter Russ. Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run and Russ was 2-for-3 with a double. WCCA (2-3) was led by Corey Havard, who went 2-for-4, and Sutton Olive, who hit a home run.

Franklin County 22, Hazlehurst 0

HAZLEHURST — Ben McDowell pitched three innings of no-hit ball and hit a grand slam home run in the top of the third inning as the Bulldogs shut out the Indians in Region 7-3A action Friday afternoon.

McDowell struck out seven batters and walked just one in picking up the win. His grand slam was one of three home runs hit by the Bulldogs in their nine-run barrage in the top of the third. Dehendret Collins and Ryne Tutor also hit one out of the park.

“Ben’s pitching good for us right now,” Franklin County head coach Jeremy Loy said. “We’re off to a good start and hope we can keep it going.”

Franklin County (5-1, 2-0) had 14 hits in the game. Tutor went 2-for-3 with the homer and a double. Justin D’Avy and Blaine Abernathy also went 2-for-3 while Phillip Dillon and Christian Johnston each had a double for the Bulldogs.

Huntington 11, Prairie View 4

WINNSBORO, La. — Josh Lee overcame a shaky start on the mound with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning as he helped the Hounds defeat the Spartans Friday night at the Franklin Academy Tournament.

The home run in the first inning was the first of two in the game for Lee, who was also the winning pitcher. He also finished off the scoring in the four-inning contest with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth.

Huntington (2-2) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good. The Hounds added three more runs an inning later. Prairie View tried to stage a late rally, cutting the lead to 7-4 in the top of the fourth before Lee ended the game in a big way.

Huntington will take on the winner of the River Oaks-Franklin Academy game in the championship game today at 6 p.m.

In their first game of the tournament, the Hounds used an eight-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to defeat the Glenbrook School Apaches 10-4 in four innings Thursday night. Lee was the winning pitcher in that game. Tyler Pere went 2-for-3 with a double and Jordan Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double.

Trinity Episcopal 8, Centreville 5 (8 innings)

CENTREVILLE — The Saints overcame six errors with some timely hitting as they rallied to defeat the Tigers in the first game of a varsity doubleheader Friday night.

Trinity (2-0) played their first game since defeating Huntington on Monday and it showed defensively. Centreville stayed right with the Saints despite having just four hits in the game. The Tigers forced extra innings by scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-5 game after the Saints took the lead with one run in the top of the seventh.

However, Trinity won the game by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Winning pitcher Matthew Freeman preserved the win by holding Centreville scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. Freeman also went 2-for-3 with a triple.

Brian Sanderson led the Saints’ nine-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and Clint Easom hit a home run. Despite being the losing pitcher on the mound for the Tigers, Brandon Aldridge went 2-for-4 and had their only extra-base hit with a home run.
