VIDALIA— The 2008 Vidalia Baseball Classic started off with a nail-biter.
The Pineville Rebels used a strong pitching performance by Chandler Jenkins to take a 5-4 win over the Trinity Saints.
“We got down early, but we battled back,” Trinity head coach Matt Mason said. “I’m glad we kept our intensity.”
Pineville (3-7) led by two in the fifth when Trinity put up four runs in the top of the inning to take a two run lead.
The Rebels then came back and scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie up the game and send it into an extra inning.
In the top of the eighth Trinity couldn’t get anything going and Pineville retired their first three batters.
In the bottom of the eighth the Rebels got a leadoff double and then the runner advanced to third on a passed ball.
Lance LaBorde then hit a sacrifice fly to send the runner in and seal the victory for the Rebels.
Chandler Jenkins got the win for Pineville while Jordan Dossett was handed the loss for Trinity.
Pineville faces Cathedral Saturday in the winner’s bracket.
Trinity will play ACCS Saturday in the loser’s bracket.
Cathedral 8, ACCS 7
In the second game of the night, the Cathedral Green Wave used a strong offensive effort by Caleb Johnson to take a narrow win over the Adams County Christian Rebels.
“I was glad we hung on to it at the end there,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said.
Cathedral led 2-0 in the second when Caleb Johnson came in and hit a double to centerfield and scored three more runs for the Green Wave to give them a 5-0 lead.
The Green Wave led by three going into the fourth when Adams County scored two runs on an Audie Crosby double to bring the Rebels within one run.
Unfortunately for ACCS, they couldn’t score any more runs and the game ended after the fourth due to a tournament time restriction.
Caleb Johnson was 3-3 on the night with a double, two singles and four RBI’s.
Preston Edwards was handed the win for Cathedral while Colin Dollar was handed the loss for ACCS.
Cathedral plays Salem in a double header tomorrow, then plays Pineville Saturday in the winner’s bracket.
ACCS plays Trinity Saturday in the loser’s bracket of the tournament.
