NATCHEZ — Kendall Logan’s three-run home run sparked an incredible rally for Natchez High as the Bulldogs defeated the Wingfield Falcons 16-6 in six innings Monday afternoon at Chester Willis Field.

The win was a big one for Natchez High (2-5 overall) as it improved to 1-2 in Division 6-5A. For much of the season, the Bulldogs struggled both at the plate and on defense. That was not the case, however, against Wingfield.

“The key moment was putting the ball in play. When you put the ball in play, anything can happen,” Natchez High head coach Charlie Williams said. “Today we had a total of seven this. That’s an improvement.”

Jonathan Sweet had a run-scoring double as Wingfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning — a lead the Falcons kept until the bottom of the third.

Natchez High took the lead for good with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Javon Washington and Melvin Davis keyed the rally with RBI doubles.

After Wingfield scored three runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 10-6 game, the Bulldogs took advantage of five walks by Falcons’ pitching and an RBI single by Washington to end the game in the bottom of the sixth.

“At the end of the game, they walked a lot (of batters),” Williams said. “They walked eight batters in the game.”

Washington was the only multiple hitter for either team as he went 2-for-2.

Huntington 4, Tensas Academy 1 (4 innings)

FERRIDAY — Jody Cottongin and Josh Lee each hit doubles to spark Huntington’s three-run first inning as the Hounds defeated the Chiefs in their MPSA District 6-A opener that was called after four innings due to rain.

Lee was also the winning pitcher for Huntington (4-6, 1-0), allowing one run on one hit in four innings. The doubles by Lee and Cottongin were the only hits given up by losing pitcher J.T. James, who also pitched four innings.

Huntington’s district game at Tallulah Academy has been changed. It will still be played today, but the junior varsity game has been cancelled and the varsity game will start at 3:30 p.m. because Tallulah Academy’s baseball field does not have lights.

WCCA vs. Centreville rained out

CENTREVILLE — Monday night’s varsity game between Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Centreville Academy was rained out with the Rams leading the Tigers 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

However, the game may not be completed with both teams fixing to start district play. “Being a non-district game, that’s going to be hard to do,” WCCA head coach Ray Olive said.

WCCA scored one run each in the top of the first and third innings while Centreville scored its one run in the bottom of the second inning. The game was called before the Tigers could go to bat in the bottom of the fourth.

Trinity Episcopal 9, Amite School Center 2

LIBERTY — The rain held off long enough for the Saints to score seven runs in the top of the sixth inning as they overcame an early deficit to defeat the Rebels Monday afternoon.

Trinity (6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Alex Vadon hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give Amite School Center a one-run lead. Vadon went 2-for-4 to lead the Rebels at the plate.

The Saints tied the game with one run in the top of the fourth before putting the game away a couple of innings later. Matthew Freeman led Trinity’s 11-run attack by going 3-for-5 and winning pitcher Parker Brumfield went 2-for-4 with a double. Chase Patrick and Kent King went 2-for-2.
