PRENTISS — Trumaine Norwood gave up just three hits, struck out six and walked two as he picked up his first high school pitching win in WCCA’s 10-0 win over Prentiss Christian Monday afternoon.
Norwood had Prentiss Christian batters baffled throughout the five-inning contest and Rams head coach Ray Olive was more than pleased with his performance.
“He’s always been capable. We just decided to bring him in as a pitcher this year,” Olive said. “He had command of his pitches. He had good velocity. He kept them off-balanced.”
Of the two Saints batters who were able to get hits off Norwood, P. Barnes had the most success, going 2-for-3.
On the other hand, the Rams had their way with Prentiss Christian’s pitchers as they finished with 10 hits. Brandon Simon went 2-for-4 with a home run and Lane McCarty went 3-for-3 with a triple.
“They threw several different pitchers against us, each with different styles,” Olive said. “We hit the ball hard. Even some of the outs, we hit the ball hard. I was pleased with our hitting.”
WCCA, 8-5 overall and 2-0 in MPSA District 6-A, returns to district action tonight when it travels to Ferriday to take on Huntington at 7 p.m. The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m.
ACCS 9, Central Private 5
Parklane 9, ACCS 2
MCCOMB — The ACCS Rebels got off to a good start at the Parklane Tournament with a stunning upset over second-ranked Central Private Monday afternoon.
After an earlier win in tournament action, Central Private went into its game with ACCS with a 10-0 record. However, after the game was over, the Rebels from Baker, La. were undefeated no more.
And while each team had 12 hits in the game, the Rebels from Natchez took advantage of their hits more than Central Private did. ACCS senior pitcher Luke Brumfield was another key to the win as kept the ‘visiting’ Rebels scoreless in four of the seven inning.
“Our bats came alive in that first game. It was a fun game to watch,” ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said. “We played great defense and Luke did a good job for us.”
Central Private jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before ACCS responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning and two in the bottom of the third.
ACCS took a 9-3 lead into the seventh inning before Central Private scored two runs in the top of that inning, but it wasn’t enough.
Dustin Carroll went 2-for-4 with both of his hits going for doubles and Brumfield also went 2-for-4.
ACCS would not be as lucky in its second game of the day as the Rebels lost to the fifth-ranked and host Pioneers. Parklane broke a tie ball game with one run in the bottom of the second inning and then put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the third.
The Rebels will take on Centreville at 3 p.m. as action in the Parklane Tournament continues.
