NATCHEZ — The Sunshine Enterprises-sponsored team of Rick Ellis, Willie Alford, T.J. Boyd and Danny Barlow shot an 8-under-par 63 to win the inaugural Lynn Hinson Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday morning at the Duncan Park Golf Course.
However, the winning team had to win by a scorecard comparison after Mayor West’s Team — Phillip West, Phil Hennington, Jerry Watts and Jim Johnson — also fired a round of 8-under-par 63.
Yet even though Mayor West’s Team finished second, Johnson, the pastor at First United Pentecostal Church, and Hennington said they had a lot of fun.
“It was fantastic. We were 8-under,” Johnson said. “It was great. And it was for a good cause.”
“We had good teamwork. Everybody came through on one of their shots,” Hennington said. “You couldn’t ask for any better weather.”
Johnson added that the keys to the team’s round were long drives and some good putting.
Brother Ryan French of First United Pentecostal Church, which hosted the tournament, said the tournament was a way to honor Hinson, who was a long-time member of the church before passing away last summer.
“He had a lot of family in Natchez and a lot of family at the church,” French said. “All of the profits are going to our church building fund. He loved to work on the church and he loved crawfish. It’s a way to honor his memory and raise some money. We hope to make a profit.”
French added that while he was pleased with the turnout, he was hoping there would have more people participating.
“This was our first year for this and hopefully next year it will be bigger and better. We had several businesses sponsor holes. We’ll do more advertising for this next year,” he said.
