NATCHEZ — Cathedral looked impressive in picking up a 10-run district win over Bogue Chitto Thursday night, but the most important thing might have been the performance of the Green Wave’s starting pitcher.

Daniel Jenkins allowed only one unearned run in three innings of work in his first extended mound action of the season as he attempts to come back from elbow injury, and did it pain free in Cathedral’s 13-3, five-inning win.

“I was glad to see Daniel go three innings for the first time in months with no elbow trouble,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “It’s been hurt since last year. This was his first game to start.”

The Green Wave gave Jenkins lots of runs to work with, scoring seven times in the bottom of the first and five times in the second to take a 12-0 lead after two innings.

Cathedral collected six hits in the first inning, including RBI singles from Jenkins, Aaron White, Braxton Fondren and Jesse Morrison.

Hunter Foster hit a two-run single in the second inning and Blasé Bradford hit a two-run triple as well before scoring on a ground out by Fondren.

“We hit the ball well early in the game,” Beesley said. “We’ve been swinging the bats well in the last week. It seems like we might be peaking at the right time of the season with the playoffs coming up in a couple of weeks.”

Fondren, Morrison and Jenkins all finished the game 2-for-3 and the Wave pounded out 11 hits as a team.

Dylan White relieved Jenkins after the third inning and pitched the final two innings, allowing a two-run single to Michael Martin in the top of the fourth inning.

He pitched a perfect fifth inning to end the game with the 10-run mercy rule.

Cathedral improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in Region 8-1A with the win. They will hit the road to play at Monterey today and at St. Aloysius tomorrow in non-district games.
