Bulldogs handed rare loss

MONTICELLO — Franklin County has dominated most of its competition during the 2008 season with the exception of Class 4A Lawrence County, which on Saturday afternoon defeating the Bulldogs 10-7.

It was the Cougars’ second win over the Bulldogs this season.

Neither team’s pitching staff was effective in this game, especially in the first three innings.

Lawrence County had a precarious 5-4 lead going into the fourth inning.

But after the Bulldogs couldn’t get a run across in their half of the fourth, the Cougars appeared to have control of the game when they plated four runs of their own in the home half of the inning to expand their lead to 9-4.

But Franklin County (13-3) wouldn’t go down quietly as it scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 9-7 game.

However, those would be the last runs the Bulldogs would get as they were held scoreless in the final two innings.

The Cougars scored once in the bottom of the fifth.

Blaine Abernathy went 2-for-3 with a double and Matt Loftin hit a home run for the Bulldogs.

Centreville 4

CENTREVILLE — Even though Brookhaven Academy had just four hits to nine for Centreville, the Cougars somehow managed to hold on for a one-run win over the Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Brookhaven Academy scored three runs in the top of the first inning and looked to be in control of the game after taking a 4-1 lead in the second inning. But the Cougars nearly let that lead slip away.

Centreville (3-12) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth inning.

But in the top half of the sixth, the Cougars scored one run that gave them a 5-4 lead and that proved to be the difference in the outcome of the game.

Brad Jelks went 2-for-3 with a double and Chase Wilkins, who took the loss for Centreville on the mound, was 2-for-4.

Corey Dickerson had Brookhaven Academy’s only extra-base hit of the game with a home run.
