CENTREVILLE — Centreville’s running game was too much for an undefeated Wilkinson County Christian Academy team Friday, as the Tigers handed the Rams their first loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, it was all Centreville as the Tigers wore down WCCA’s defense en route to a 36-7 win to even its overall record at 2-2.

“We had a good hard week of practice, and it paid off with a win,” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said.

Randy Bell and Tyler Towles each scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give Centreville a 13-0 halftime lead. Then with 7:16 to go in the third quarter, the Tigers got a safety when WCCA snapped the ball through the end zone. They got the ball back and scored on a 10-yard run by Towles with 6:04 remaining in the quarter.

“We were able to control the line of scrimmage. What broke the camel’s back was they had to take a safety in the back of the end zone. Then they had to kick it back to us and we scored again,” Stutzman said.

Cliff Hurst scored on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter that gave Centreville a commanding 29-0 lead. Colton Terrell, who was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 84 yards on eight carries, scored on a 15-yard run with 9:15 left in the game.

Hunter Travis had six carries for 35 yards to go with two catches for 27 yards.

WCCA’s only touchdown was a 3-yard run by Tramel McKinsey with 4:50 remaining in the game. McKinsey finished with 51 yards on 13 carries, and Josh Gayle led the Rams’ rushing attack with 60 yards on six carries.

But the Tigers’ defense did its job of neutralizing the Rams’ ground game. They held WCCA to just 136 yards on 30 carries

Centreville plays at Oak Forest next Friday at 7 p.m. WCCA (3-1) returns to MAIS South Central A (District 3-A) action next Friday when it plays at Riverfield at 7 p.m.

East Marion 35, Jefferson County 6

FAYETTE — Jefferson County’s struggles on offense continued as the Tigers scored just six points for the second consecutive game and the East Marion Eagles cruised to another impressive win Friday night.

East Marion, ranked No. 5 in both the Clarion-Ledger and Mississippi Associated Press Class 2A polls, jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a couple of long plays in the first quarter. Xavier Grindle scored on a 65-yard run less than three minutes into the game and Deandrey Johnson connected with Antoine Mitchell on a 61-yard touchdown pass midway through the quarter.

Johnson scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter to give East Marion (4-0) a commanding 21-0 lead. Jefferson County finally got on the scoreboard when Monroe Barnes threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Devion Barnes with 1:24 to go until halftime. But the two-point conversion run was no good and the Tigers were down 21-6.

Any bit of momentum that the Tigers thought they were going to have heading into the half quickly went away when Grindle took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 27-6 lead just 16 seconds later.

East Marion added a safety when Gerrod Howard blocked a punt late in the third quarter and Jalen Akins scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Jefferson County (1-3) plays at South Delta with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff next Friday.

South Pike 43, Wilkinson County 6

MAGNOLIA — Raheem Magee, Virgil Dawson and John Jones each scored two touchdowns as the South Pike Eagles defeated the Wilkinson County Wildcats Friday night.

Magee scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from William James and on a 25-yard run in the first half as South Pike (3-1) took a 13-0 halftime lead. Dawson then had touchdown runs of 9 and 4 yards while Magee added a two-point conversion run after each score to make it a 29-0 game in the third quarter.

Wilkinson County scored on a 10-yard run by Roosevelt Talbort late in the third quarter. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Eagles weren’t done putting points on the board.

Jones had touchdown runs of 5 yards and 1 yard and added a two-point conversion run after his second touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish off the blowout.

Wilkinson County (1-2) hosts Baker (La.) High next Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
