NATCHEZ — The combination of great pitching by Brian Sanderson and hot hitting gave the Trinity Saints a 10-0 District 3-AA win over the visiting Prairie View Spartans in five innings Monday evening at Chester Willis Field.
“I was very pleased with our overall effort,” Trinity head coach Matt Mason said. “This was Brian’s first start after shoulder surgery and he pitched excellent.”
The Saints (14-4, 6-1) took a 6-0 lead after three innings and never looked back.
Colby Gilbert walked six Saint batters and hit three, including Sanderson twice.
Sanderson only allowed two hits the entire game with the biggest being a third inning triple by Alan Spires.
Trinity scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 10-run lead.
Prarie View had to score a run in the top of the fifth inning to keep the game going, but Sanderson had different ideas and retired the first three Spartan batters to end it.
“We hit well and played great defense all night,” Mason said. “The speed in our outfield really helped us tonight.”
Sanderson picked up the win for Trinity while Gilbert was handed the loss.
Sanderson also batted 2-for-2 with two singles and two RBIs for Trinity.
Spires had a 1-for-2 effort for Prairie View with his triple in the third inning.
Trinity travels to Prairie View this Friday for a District 3-AA doubleheader with the Spartans.
