NATCHEZ — Cathedral played against two opponents Friday evening and defeated both of them.

The Green Wave managed to find a window of time to play in between the rainstorms that swept across the area Friday and in doing so, defeated region foe West Lincoln 14-3 to remain perfect in Region 8-1A.

The game was originally scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but was moved forward two hours and started a little after 5. It finished about half an hour before another round of thunderstorms began.

“All day long I thought we would get rained out,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “But we managed to get it in. That will help us next week in the number of games we play.”

The game was tied at two runs apiece early, but Cathedral scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to blow the game wide open.

Four consecutive walks and a hit batsman forced in the first four runs of the inning before Caleb Johnson knocked home two with a single.

Kole Junkin batted in the Wave’s sixth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly before Daniel Jenkins closed the scoring with an RBI single to give the Green Wave a 10-2 lead.

While West Lincoln’s pitchers were wild, Cathedral got some great pitching from Aaron White, who came on in relief of starter Preston Edwards and pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.

“Aaron did the job for us tonight,” Beesley said. “He’s a consistent pitcher. He’s not overpowering, but he does a good job for us.”

Cathedral added three more runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the fourth to close the scoring.

With the victory, the Green Wave (14-2, 8-0) clinched the No. 1 seed in the region and will play the No. 4 seed out of Region 7-1A in the playoffs that begin in a few weeks.

“We usually do well in region play, but I was a little worried about West Lincoln,” Beesley said. “So I has glad to see us play as well as we did against them this week.”
