Students, festivals top week

The school year is coming to a close around us and spring festival season is well under way. It’s an exciting time to live in the Miss-Lou.
Let’s take a moment to review some of the good news last week brought us.
Natchez High School students Victoria Williams and Danny Ray Thompson are just two of many area students awarded scholarships lately. These two were chosen based on their future potential. The scholarship money is given by the family of David Lee Wiley in the form of a memorial.
These two students already have college plans, and we hope the extra money starts things out on the right foot.
The Natchez Bluff Blues Fest has provided a fun weekend in the area for years. But this year, the festival’s organizers joined forces with the Natchez Association for the Preservation of African-American Culture. The two agencies sponsored a parade downtown Friday night and then unveiled a memorial for the tragic Rhythm Night Club fire that killed so many in Natchez years ago. Saturday, the crowds listening to music on the bluff represented all walks of life, organizers said. It’s great that our community has an event that can reach out to so many.
At the same time, the Vidalia Fire Department and friends was having their own musical party across the river. Vittles & Fittles has become an annual fundraiser for the fire department and a great weekend for the bluegrass fans in the area.
With spring here, summer coming, and the river about to crest, the next few weeks promise to be great ones.
