FERRIDAY — A local radio station was recently honored for its service to the community.
KFNV 107.1 FM The River was awarded the Prestige award by the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters Saturday.
The Prestige award is given for excellence in broadcast ethics and service to the community, station general manager Desirée Smith said.
The main goal of radio stations should be service, Smith said.
“We play a lot of music to get people to listen, but we’re really here to serve the community, whether by raising funds for St. Jude or to help offset the healthcare costs for one person,” she said. “It’s really neat to do something like that.”
The award the station received was for a small-market station, and coming from a small market has its benefits for a station that wants to serve people, Smith said.
“The good thing about a small market is that if it is one person or a big group you’re working with, it works,” she said.
This is the second time the station has won the award.
Some of the events the station has worked with include raising funds for St. Jude’s hospital, the Cathedral School blood drive, the Natchez Bluff Blues Festival and the Lake St. John flotilla.
Smith and her husband Mike co-manage the station together, while Laura Prather serves as account manager, Eddie Ray is program director and April Lowry serves as traffic manager.
Two part-time employees, Sue Dodd and Billy Ray Lowry, also work at the station.
