Alcorn State falls to Jackson State

LORMAN — Four Jackson State players had 3 RBIs a piece to lead the Tigers in a 20-7 victory over Alcorn State.
The Braves won two out of three games in the weekend series to help them hold on to the number two spot in the Eastern Division of the SWAC Standings.
JSU’s Derrick Johnson homer to right field gave the Tigers a three run lead over the Braves in the first inning.
The Tigers kept their scoring drive alive in the third in when Cortez Cole scored off Willie Wesley’s single to right center.
Alcorn State got on the scoreboard once Terrell Johnson scored off a walk by Jabari Graham. JSU responded with a run by LaDerek Camper.
The Tigers opened up a seven-run deficit on the Braves as they had another three-run inning.
Alcorn State tried to battle back with their own three-run inning. The Braves’ changes in the outfield and on the mound were not enough to keep the Tigers from scoring the remainder.
Alcorn State will return to action on Tuesday against Southeastern Louisiana.
LSU 3, Kentucky 1

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Michael Hollander doubled in the 10th inning to drive in the winning run as LSU beat Kentucky 3-1 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday.
Jared Mitchell hit a home run in the second inning of the nightcap as LSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead and went on to win the second game 12-5.
Hollander, Chris McGhee and Sean Ochinko had two hits apiece for LSU in the first game. Keenan Wiley scored Kentucky’s only run in that game.
In the second game, Ochinko and Helenihi had two hits and two RBIs each for the Tigers. Ryan Wilkes paced Kentucky with a 3-for-5 performance, with one run scored and an RBI.
Mississippi State 4, Auburn 3
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Mississippi State took a 4-3 win over Auburn University on Saturday in the second match of a three-game weekend series.
The Tigers got on the board first with a run in the second inning, but the Tigers answered with three runs in the third to take the lead.
Auburn added another in the bottom of the inning and neither team scored in the fourth or fifth.
Mississippi State scored in the sixth and Auburn added the game’s final run in the eighth inning.
Ricky Bowen took the win after six innings of work. He allowed five hits and struck out five batters.
Taylor Thompson allowed four runs and five hits in six innings on the mound for the loss. He struck out seven.
Ole Miss 9, Georgia 4
ATHENS, Ga. — The Rebel offense got on track Saturday, exploding for six runs in the eighth inning as No. 25 Ole Miss (31-18, 12-11 SEC) rallied to pick up a 9-4 win over No. 8 Georgia (30-15-1, 16-6-1 SEC) at Foley Field and even the weekend series at a game each.
Six Rebels notched multiple hits on the afternoon and were paced by a trio of hitters as Jordan Henry (2-for-4; two RBI, two runs scored), Sean Stuyverson (2-for-4; two runs scored) and Brett Basham (2-for-4; RBI, two runs scores) led the offensive output.
Scott Bittle (4-1) picked up the win in relief as he worked 2.2 innings in relief of Drew Pomeranz. Bittle struck out six and allowed only one hit in his time on the mound after entering with the Rebels trailing by one and with a runner on base.
Nick Montgomery (1-1) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs as he worked 0.2 innings in relief and allowed four runs on four hits. Starter Stephen Dodson worked 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Southern Miss 12, Marshall 8
CHARLESTON, W. Va. —Southern Miss pounded out 15 hits and scored 12 runs to defeat Marshall 12-8 and even the series headed into the rubber game tomorrow afternoon at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia.
Keith Winstead led the offense with his first career four hit game including a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Southern Miss (33-15, 10-7 CUSA) continued to hit the ball out of the park again Saturday, with three home runs on the evening. James Ewing, Trey Sutton and Chris Matesich all went deep for the Golden Eagles. Ewing ended the game with three hits, two runs scored and five RBI. Sutton collected three hits, three RBI and a run scored.
In the first two games of the series at Marshall, Southern Miss has scored 22 runs on 29 hits.
Starting pitcher Todd McInnis lasted only 2.1 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. The bright spot on the mound for Southern Miss was freshman Collin Cargill, who worked 4.2 innings allowing two runs on only one hit to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. Staff ace and Vidalia High graduate Barry Bowden is scheduled to make his return to the mound after nearly a months absence.
Delta State 6, North Alabama 2
MILLINGTON, TENN. — Kenny Smalley struck out nine Saturday en route to Delta State’s 6-2 victory over North Alabama in the opening game for the Statesmen at the Gulf South Conference Tournament at USA Stadium. The No. 2-ranked Statesmen improved to 41-8 on the season, while the Lions slid to 29-20.
Smalley, a junior right-hander from St. Charles, Ill., set the tone early for the Statesmen by setting down the first 10 Lion batters he faced over 3.1 innings.
The Statesmen would take advantage of Smalley’s pitching with an early 2-0 lead on RBI-singles by Devin Goodwin and Anthony Palasini in the first and second innings ht field line.
Delta State will face the winner of the West Alabama/Ouachita Baptist game at 7:30 p.m. today at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
