CENTREVILLE — It wasn’t quite the ending Centreville Academy had in mind.

With a 28-27 lead over rival Trinity Episcopal last Friday, the Tigers were 30 seconds away from victory. But a desperation pass by Trinity led to a last-second touchdown by the Saints’ Tip McKenzie, giving Trinity a 33-28 win.

Now, the Tigers will have to push that game aside as they take the road this evening to face Parklane Academy.

“We came off a hard loss last week, but right now (the players) know we have to put that behind us and move forward,” Centreville assistant Robbie Isonhood said.

“We’ve had a really good, upbeat, positive week of practice. We did quite a bit of running and pushing the sled Monday. Monday is our big conditioning day, and we were a little disappointed in the conditioning of the team last week, so we pushed them a little harder than normal.”

Despite the nature of the loss to Trinity, Isonhood said there were several things the Tigers could take away from the game, both good and bad.

“We saw a lot of positives in that game, and a lot of negatives, too,” Isonhood said. “The positives outweighed the negatives, but we really had to concentrate on the negatives.”

That’s because the coaches want the team to learn from their mistakes, Isonhood said.

“We had a lot of mental errors, not so much physical errors,” he said. “We had too many penalties, and we shouldn’t have that. We had some dropped passes, and we shouldn’t have that.

“Like I said, there were a lot of negatives to point out on the film, but we saw a lot of good things as well. We just need to refocus and fine tune the negatives.”

There’s also a mindset that if Centreville takes care of business the rest of the season, the Tigers will have another shot at Trinity, Isonhood said.

“(Trinity head coach) David King and I were talking, and we were wondering how we’d both play if we meet up again.

“The kids look forward to it. When you lose games like that, it kind of pushes you to win and get to the playoffs. It’s sort of a motivating factor for them to regain themselves after that loss.”

Isonhood said the Tigers will face a tough road test tonight when they travel to Parklane.

“They’ve always been a powerhouse football team,” Isonhood said. “They run the ball well, and they’ll spread you out. You never can overlook them. They have a great staff, and they’re always competitive no matter what.”

The Centreville-Parklane matchup has also evolved into sort of a rivalry in itself, Isonhood said.

“They’re within 40 miles (of us), and we always have to be on our toes against them,” he said.

Kickoff at Parklane is at 7 tonight.
