NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal might not have won a state championship in any sport this year, but they were able to accomplish something almost as noteworthy.

In their first year in MPSA Class AA after having spent the previous years in Class A, the Saints captured district championships in five different boys sports.

Trinity won district championships in football, basketball, baseball, track and field and tennis.

“Coming back up to Class AA and winning championships in five different sports is a tribute to how hard the kids worked,” Trinity athletic director David King said. “We’re the smallest AA school in the MPSA. We had to have a strong senior leadership class to pull it off, and we had that.”

King, who also coached the football, basketball and track and field teams, said it is the goal of the school’s athletic program to be competitive at every sport.

“It’s a good feeling to be competitive in each sport,” King said. “Some schools only concentrate on a couple of sports but we want to be competitive across the board in every sport we participate in.”

Outgoing senior Parker Brumfield, who was a member of each of the five district-winning teams, said winning five district championships is a great accomplishment for the senior class at Trinity.

“Most of us have been playing together for a long time and we play together well,” Brumfield said. “It’s a great feat to accomplish, especially after moving up to Class AA. It’s something I don’t think Trinity has ever accomplished.”

Brumfield gave credit to King and baseball coach Matt Mason for keeping the players motivated in the different sports.

“They kept pushing us to be great and they got everything out of us,” Brumfield said.

King said that while the football and basketball teams expect to play for championships, it was a pleasant surprise for the baseball, track and field and tennis teams to be as strong as they were.

“We’ve been successful for a long time in (football and basketball),” King said. “But it was a surprise we competed as well as we did in track and baseball. This was a pivotal year for the baseball program.”

Even though the 2007-2008 school year didn’t result in any state championships for the Saints, the five district trophies the school won was enough to qualify it as a great year.

“This is one of the better seasons that Trinity has had,” King said. “It’s good to know that we’re better with baseball, tennis and track. We’re going to keep that going.”
