Marshall stuns Southern Miss

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nate Lape hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs overall to help Marshall stay alive in the Conference USA tournament with a 6-3 win over Southern Miss on Saturday night.
With the win, Marshall (29-29-1) forced a rematch with the Golden Eagles (40-19) on Sunday morning to decide who’ll play later that afternoon in the tournament championship game.
The performance capped a banner day for Lape, who had a two-run home run and three RBI in Marshall’s victory 8-7 over Tulane on Saturday morning, which eliminated the Green Wave.
Having broken the previous school record of 27 victories in a season, Marshall returned 4 1/2 hours later to play Southern Miss, using a season-high nine pitchers to defeat the Golden Eagles.
Ryan Kiel (3-1) pitched three innings, the most of any Marshall pitcher. He opened the bottom of the fourth and did not allow a run, giving up only one hit and striking out three in getting the win.
Marshall took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Tommy Johnson’s sacrifice fly, which scored Rowley from third. Lape’s three-run blast to center followed in the third, making 4-0.
Bo Davis’ two-run home run off of Adam Dobies cut Marshall’s lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third. But Marshall responded with two more runs in the top of the fifth on Josh Valle’s RBI single and Lape’s run-scoring double.
Freshman pitcher Shane Farrell started the game for Marshall and threw two scoreless innings. Justin Moore, Andrew Hancock, Tyler Gatrell, Kenny Socorro and Ian Kadish also pitched for the Thundering Herd.
with Southern Miss’ final run being charged to Kadish.
Golden Eagles starter Brian Leach (2-3) took the loss.
