Walker taking advantage of home run power

NATCHEZ — You’ve heard of Babe Ruth, well Vidalia has its own batting legend — but with a few twists.

For starters, Vidalia’s slugger stands just about 5-feet tall.

Perhaps the most remarkable twist is that Vidalia’s slugger is just a 10-year-old girl named Lindsay Walker.

In some ways Walker is a lot like Ruth. Not only does she hit record home runs, but she pitches, as well as plays first base.

This past year Walker hit her longest home run to date. The shot cleared the left field fence, landing on the baseball field that backs up to the softball field — 240 feet away.

When asked what her secret is to hitting her tape-measure home runs, the soft-spoken Walker just shrugs her shoulders.

There’s no secret to hitting her home runs, she says.

“I just hit what the pitcher gives me.”

Her mom, Margaret, said she’s even had to hold back a bit this past season for fear of hurting opposing fielders. Last year, at age 9, she lined a ball at an opposing shortstop, catching the girl in the face.

Over the course of three seasons the youngest Walker has hit five home runs over the wall, which stands at 190-feet to straightaway center. This year, Walker has hit 11 home runs according to her mother — who is also her coach. Of her 11 this season, 10 were inside the park homers.

Although Walker is somewhat of a local phenom, her legendary power for her age may be traveling to throughout the Southeast soon.

Two years ago Walker traveled with the Vidalia Lil’ Angels to the softball World Series in Kissimmee, Fla. and placed second in the home run tournament.

Walker has aspirations of one day playing collegiate softball, and knows if she keeps swinging the way she is colleges may be calling soon enough.

While watching softball on TV with her mother, Walker said, “You’re going to see me on TV like this one day.”

One day Lindsay, maybe sooner rather than later.
