NATCHEZ — After years of waiting residents living near the dam on Robin’s Lake Road are breathing a sigh of relief.
The dam is fixed.
Residents living in the area said the dam was badly eroded and in danger of possibly failing.
Fran Brellenthin lives near the dam and its unofficial spokesperson.
“It’s great,” she said of the project’s completion. “We’re thrilled it’s finally done.”
For years Brellenthin, and her neighbors, have been petitioning county officials to have the dam repaired.
“It really needed a lot of work,” she said.
The Robin’s Lake side of the dam had become badly eroded and residents were concerned that the erosion would compromise the other side of the dam.
But that should be a thing of the past.
National Resources Conservation Service’s state conservation engineer Kim Harris said the dam work needed to be done.
“The downstream slope was failing,” he said.
Harris said the compromised side of the dam has been fortified with new dirt, rock and concrete.
“It’s basically done,” he said.
NRCS’s district conservationist Perry Mason said needed a hard rain to test the amount of soil loss Mason
“We’re waiting on an event sufficient to test the wash,” he said.
But between now and the next hard rain residents will be enjoying their new dam.
John Gormanous who also lives near the dam said he was pleased to see the dam completed after years of delays.
“We’re grateful,” he said.
