MEADVILLE — Even though there was inclement weather in central Franklin County Tuesday afternoon, it did not keep the South Pike-Franklin County slow-pitch softball game from taking place, which turned out to be a good thing for the Lady Bulldogs.

They pounded out a season-high 22 hits, six of which went for extra bases, as they coasted to a 12-2 win over the Lady Eagles in five innings.

“It rained for about 30 minutes, not heavy, just enough to make it nice and playable,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said. “The heavy rain stayed south of us.”

After both teams failed to score in the first inning, Franklin County took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the third to for a 5-0 lead before South Pike got on the board with a couple of runs in the top of the fourth.

Despite having 11 hits in the game, those were the only runs the Lady Eagles managed to score against winning pitcher Mildred Starks.

The Lady Bulldogs got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning and wound up 10-run ruling the Lady Eagles after scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

KeKe Collins went 4-for-4 with two triples, Hayle McKinney was 3-for-3 with a double, and Lay Lay Griffin and Si’Edriq Middleton each went 3-for-4 with a double.

“Best hitting we’ve had yet,” Smith said.

South Pike was led by Tremayia Weatherspoon, who was 2-for-2 with a double.

Franklin County (4-2) next plays at the West Lincoln Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs will take on Bogue Chitto at 11:30 a.m., South Pike at 4:30 p.m., and McComb at 5:45 p.m.

Brookhaven Academy 9, Trinity Episcopal 4

BROOKHAVEN — Trinity Episcopal was looking to get over the .500 mark for the season with a win over Brookhaven Academy Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately, that would not be the case as the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Saints in five and a half innings in MAIS District 5-AA action. The loss dropped Trinity to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in district play.

Trinity hosts Tensas Academy next Monday with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.
