NATCHEZ — After four years of hard work in the classroom and on the playing field, Parker Brumfield has been named STAR student for Trinity Episcopal Day School.

“It was a great honor, definitely,” he said.

Brumfield will attend Mississippi State University in the fall to study finance, but his school choice was not based on his major.

“I’ve been a Mississippi State fan my whole life,” Brumfield said. “I pretty much made the decision when I was 6.”

Brumfield expects to major in finance in order to pursue a career as a stock trader like his uncles.

“Math being my best subject… my uncle said basically you just need to be good at math,” Brumfield said. “He’s also very well off so that kind of interests me too.”

His strong math skills helped him get a 28 on his ACT and a 4.1 grade point average.

However, Brumfield was hardly a bookworm. He also played football, basketball, baseball, track and tennis.

“I’m considering walking on for baseball at Mississippi State, but I’m not positive on that,” he said.

Brumfield’s mother, Cynthia Brumfield, said Parker has always been driven to succeed in all aspects of school.

“He’s always been self motivated to do the best he could in sports and academics,” she said.

Brumfield selected the Rev. Brandt Dick as his STAR teacher, in large part because of the help he gave him in math.

“Whenever he would explain stuff I would get it really good,” Brumfield said. “I just felt like he was the best choice for me.”

Dick, who taught Brumfield pre-calculus and trigonometry, also said he was honored to receive the award.

“To be recognized like that is very special,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed teaching Parker and I’m glad to know that he’s enjoyed having my classes. Any student who really puts himself out there deserves the support of his teachers.”

Brumfield is the son of Cynthia Parker Brumfield.
