NATCHEZ — There will be a blood drive Aug. 2 for a retired local deputy and firefighter who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.

The date of the blood drive was incorrectly reported in Tuesday’s edition of The Democrat.

The drive, for Jerry McDaniel, will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. next Saturday at the Sportscenter on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.

McDaniel served at the Natchez Fire Department from 1956 until 1976, where he was a lieutenant, the fire marshal and eventually a captain. After retiring at the fire department, he worked for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office from 1976 until June 1997, retiring as chief deputy.

McDaniel will have a surgery today, so it doesn’t matter what blood type donors are, his daughter DeMarie Walters said.

“Any blood that is collected will credit to my dad’s name,” Walters said. “He will likely have to draw from those credits because of the chemo and his low platelets, and blood is very expensive.”

The drive will be conducted by the Baton Rouge blood bank with their mobile unit.
