Centreville softball wins big Monday

BAKER, La. — Centreville Academy faced Central Private School a week later than originally expected, but it was well worth the wait — for the Tigers anyway.
Centreville, who won 17-0, didn’t discover the scheduling mishap until after the new schedule was released. And in the end, the delay was longer than the three-inning game that saw the Lady Tigers completely dismantle the Lady Rebels.
“We were aggressive from the get-go,” Centreville head coach Mark Mann said. “That’s the best performance (hitting the ball) we’ve had so far. One through nine we hit the ball well.”
Renee Miley led Centreville’s 14-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Katie Berry was 2-for-2 with a double in the Tigers’ MAIS District 6-AA opener. Taylor Delatte, Tori Rouse and Ashton Crum each went 2-for-3 with a double.
“Our hitting is starting to pick up a little bit. We didn’t get to practice much because we had two and a half to three weeks of rain,” Mann said. “We’re 10 games into the season. The further along, the better our sticks are coming.”
Ariana Bigner had another stellar pitching performance for the Lady Tigers (7-3, 1-0). She allowed just one hit — a one-out bunt single by Shannon Romero in the bottom of the second inning — to go with four strikeouts and no walks.
Bigner did all this after being on the mound for three of Centreville’s four games last Saturday at the Copiah Academy Tournament.
“She’s getting stronger as the season goes along,” Mann said. “Her fastball is getting better. She’s got a good rise ball. Her changeup is working better. The movement is coming around. She’s getting in better pitching shape.”
Centreville returns to district action on Thursday when it plays at Silliman Institute with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7:15 p.m.
