Vidhana enjoys the ‘natural’ feeling of sun dried clothing

NATCHEZ — On Friday when the Dart landed on Prem Vidhana’s St. Catherine Street apartment his socks were blowing in the breeze — along with his pants, shirts and sheets.

And Vidhana, like others around Natchez, is in the minority when it comes to his laundry preferences.

Vidhana uses no dryer to dry his clothes; he just lets Mother Nature do the work for him.

“They smell so much better this way,” he said.

Vidhana said not only does he like the clothes dried in the sun but it was the way he was raised.

His mother is in her 80s and still lets her clothes dry on the line.

“It’s more natural, it’s more pure,” he said. “I really like it this way.”

Vidhana said he has never owned a dryer and has not considered purchasing one.

“I really do not a have need for one,” he said leaning on his big metal rack he uses to dry his clothes.

The rack Vidhana uses resembles an enormous umbrella frame, it holds all his clothes.

His shirts, pants, sheets and even his underwear can be found at one time or another just hanging out in the backyard.

Though air-dried laundry may not be the preference of the masses, Vidhana has adopted what seems like an almost Zen-like approach for his clothes.

He said none of his clothes have ever been stolen from the line — but if they were it would be OK.

“If somebody steals my clothes I’ll just think they really needed clothing,” he said. “I can get new clothes.”

And if it rains on his just-washed load of laundry, that’s OK too.

“If they’re almost dry I’ll go get them,” he said. “But if not they just get another rinse and they’ll be cleaner.”
