Centreville Academy lacks needed defense

CENTREVILLE — The good news was that Centreville’s offense showed up for its home opener Friday night against Parklane. The bad news was that its defense did not.

Despite a 312-yard rushing performance by junior running back Zack Sinclair, the top-ranked and defending Class AA state champion Tigers lost to the Pioneers 35-27 to fall to 1-1 — the same record they had after a loss to the very same team last season.

Unlike last year’s game, in which Parklane won 19-14, this game was an offensive explosion. Sinclair scored three of Centreville’s four touchdowns, but the Pioneers countered with the trio of Chance Schmidt, Josh Armstead and Blake Brown.

Centreville’s usually solid defense gave up 265 rushing yards and 367 total yards and did not force a turnover. The Tigers had 374 of the 452 total yards on the ground.

Parklane (2-0) scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game. Schmidt scored on a 20-yard run and Armstead scored on a 57-yard run for a quick 14-0 lead. Sinclair scored on a 4-yard run and Kyle Brown added the extra point to make it a 14-7 game with 6:26 to go in the first quarter.

Schmidt then went to the air and connected with Blake Brown on a 26-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Armstead scored on a 22-yard run with 4:10 remaining in the quarter for a 28-7 Parklane lead.

Sinclair started Centreville’s comeback with a 41-yard run with just over two minutes left until halftime and the Tigers were down 28-14.

Cliff Hurst scored on a 3-yard run with just under eight minutes left in the third quarter and Brown’s extra point made it Centreville 28, Parklane 21. Sinclair then scored on a 2-yard run at the 10:41 mark of the fourth quarter, but Brown missed the extra point and the Pioneers held a one-point lead.

The Tigers got the ball back and was deep in Parklane territory. On third and two, the Tigers got a first down, only to be called back on a 15-yard penalty. They weren’t able to convert and on Parklane’s first play on the ensuing drive, Schmidt threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Brown and Mize added the extra point for a 35-27 lead.

Centreville (1-1) got the ball back a couple of more times in the fourth quarter, but could not get it in end zone. Brown had a tough night throwing the ball, completing just six of 17 passes for 78 yards with one interception.
