NATCHEZ — Though power had been restored in some portions of the Miss-Lou, Adams County Civil Defense and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials gave away water and ice to those who still did not have electricity Wednesday.
Four trucks of ice and three trucks of water were hauled to the Natchez Visitor’s center, and Wednesday afternoon traffic backed down Canal Street to the intersection of Main Street. as citizens and evacuees drove through the parking lot and the state police, Natchez Police Department, the fire department and others loaded the ice into their cars.
“Once the word got out on the radio, we had a steady flow of traffic for several hours,” coordinator Sally Durkin said.
For Natchez residents Jennifer, Landy and Malcolm Isaac, the ice meant the difference between having to restock their freezer or not.
“We’re going to put the ice in there and try to save as much food as we can,” Jennifer said. “We’ve been out of power since the very beginning. We had to spend Monday night in a church.”
Though they had emergency rations on hand, Civil Defense director Stan Owens said they decided to wait to distribute those because power was coming back on and groceries were becoming available again.
