NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School softball team brought its bats to the park Monday night in a 12-6 win over Jackson Academy.
The Lady Rebels pounded out 13 hits and forced seven Jackson Academy errors to bring their record to 2-2 on the season.
Making the opposing defense make plays is a big focus for the Lady Rebels, and they executed that plan perfectly Monday, head coach Forrest Foster said.
“We’re going to put the ball in play, even if we have to bunt we want to force the issue,” Foster said.
Tory Laird, Braxton Elveston and Jessica Reynolds led the Lady Rebels’ offensive attack. Laird had three hits, including one triple that turned into an inside the park score after a Jackson Academy error.
Elveston added three hits of her own, including two doubles. Reynolds went 3-for-3 on the night and scored twice.
“We put pressure on them with our bunts and got some good timely hits,” Foster said.
Foster said Laird was a great catalyst for his teams offensive success Monday.
Foster said his team played well on the defensive side Monday as well.
Brooke Runnels got the win for the Rebels. She pitched five innings and gave up six runs, on four hits and struck out five. Two of the runs were unearned, and Runnels struggled to find the strike zone from time to time. She walked five batters and also hit five batters.
Foster said his defense is one of the strengths of his team.
“We made really good defensive plays tonight, I’m not concerned about our defense,” he said.
The win gave the Lady Rebels a .500 record just four games into the season, and Foster said he is already seeing improvement.
“Overall I’m extremely pleased with our girls,” he said. “We are becoming more comfortable at the plate.”
Foster said his team looked uncomfortable at the plate in its first game against Centreville, but by game three against Trinity they were already showing improvement.
Foster said the Lady Rebels’ have a weapon offensively with their ability to run.
“(Speed) is our strength,” he said. “We have more team speed than I’ve ever worked with.”
Foster said that is why it is imperative that his team continues to put the ball in play. He said his team’s ability to get bunts down is a huge benefit to the Lady Rebels’ offense.
ACCS will take on Amite School Center today with the junior varsity starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity playing at 7:15 p.m. Both games will be at ACCS.
“I’m really looking forward to (tonight) against Amite School Center,” he said.
Foster said these early season games are a good way for ACCS to prepare for district play.
“We want to continue to work on fundamental stuff during these games, so we should be ready for district play,” he said.
