VIDALIA — The Republican primary that was scheduled for today to elect the fifth district U.S. Congressman has been postponed until Oct. 4 due to Hurricane Gustav.

The closed primary, in which incumbent Congressman Rodney Alexander will face an election challenge from Andrew Clack, will decide the election because no independent or Democratic candidates are on the ballot.

During early voting, 45 people cast their ballots in person, and nine mail-in ballots were received, Registrar of Voters Golda Ensminger said.

It was unclear Friday if any changes will be made regarding when mail-in ballots could be received because of the hurricane, Ensminger said.
