McCOMB — Franklin County gave McComb a stomping on its own turf Friday with a 35-6 win to remain undefeated after two games.

Alex Smith rushed nine times for 59 yards, Jamie Collins gained 42 yards on seven runs and Frank Hunt picked up 35 yards on six carries.

Collins also racked up 131 passing yards, completing 5-of-13 throws with one interception.

Despite the win, Franklin County coach Trent Hammond was displeased with his offense.

The Bulldogs racked up 16 penalties for 107 yards.

“We shot ourselves in the foot. We were down in scoring position and didn’t finish drives,” he said. “We would start at our 2-yard line and drove the length of the field, then get down to their 12 and get penalties. Bang, bang bang, and we were out of scoring position. We’ve got to become a team that can finish off drives if we want to be successful.”

But the Franklin County defense was solid.

McComb was silent until the fourth quarter, when quarterback Marshall Dexter scored on a one-yard run. The kick was no good.

Dexter picked up 36 yards on 12 carries for the night.

“Defense played extremely well tonight,” Hammond said. “We scored three times on defense tonight. That’s good.”

LaDarius Hunt led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles, followed by Jordan Hunt with seven. Bobby O’Quinn had five with one fumble return.

Taylor Washington had two catches for 75 yards for Franklin County, who got on the board with a nine-yard run by Frank Hunt with 5:54 left in the first quarter.

Adick Smith scored on a nine-yard rush at 5:06 in the second quarter, followed quickly by a 40-yard interception return by Collins.

DeHendret Collins’ 30-yard interception return with 9 seconds to go in the third put the Bulldogs soundly ahead, and a 40-yard fumble return by Frank Hunt in the fourth finished it.

“I’m pleased with our performance defensively, that we could get in there and mix it up,” Hammond said.

Jace Carlock was perfect on five extra-point attempts.

Hammond said he saw a few improvements from the team’s win over Hazelhurst, but not as much as he would have liked.

“You have to think that we didn’t improve as much as we should have because we spent two days in a parking lot without really being able to work on anything. We not only played McComb tonight, we played Gustav too.”
