TALLULAH, La. — Despite having just one day of practice to get ready for their season-opener because of Hurricane Gustav, the Ferriday Trojans had no trouble defeating the Madison High Jaguars 38-0 Friday night.

Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said he was proud of the way the players persevered and took care of business despite the fact that the city was without lights and water for part of the week.

“You can’t ask for more than that,” Harrison said.

Ferriday scored 14 points in the first quarter and six in the second quarter for a 20-0 halftime lead. The Trojans broke the game open with an 18-point third quarter.

Harrison was also pleased with the performance of junior quarterback Rodney Lawson, who was pretty successful in his debut as the Trojans’ signal-caller.

“He threw one interception, but other than that he didn’t make any bad throws. He was around 200 yards passing,” Harrison said.

The defense was another key factor in the decisive win as it forced turnovers and created good field position for the offense. Harrison rated the performance of the defense a ‘B’.

“At times, we had some assignments blown,” he said. “We played good enough to win. We didn’t play a perfect game. We’ve still got some stuff to work on. Mistakes to correct.”

Ferriday (1-0) hosts Block next Friday at 7 p.m. That will the be the first game of the season for the Bears after its game against Vidalia was cancelled due to the hurricane.
