Wake up, Natchez, and smell the coffee. Gustav was a disturbance that caused us to lose electricity and cable for approximately three days. The problems we had were minor compared to what could have happened.

Thank you to whoever implemented the curfew. Thank you for the police, the sheriff’s deputies and the state troopers who patrolled our area. These men and women left their homes and their families to make sure we were safe.

It is time to be aware that our law enforcement cannot do everything by themselves. We have to assist them in making sure our community is safe. If you see something going on, call the police department or sheriff’s office. Post the numbers by your phone so that you can make the call.

The utility employees worked around the clock to get electricity, water and cable back on while people griped and moaned. I would love to give them a big thank you.

Another thank you goes to the Natchez Democrat. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that we had our daily newspaper to keep us aware of what was going on.

Thank you to the Loy family who have been personal friends of mind for many years. They took a financial loss and had a tremendous worry during the storm. They are working diligently to get their locally-owned store stocked again while providing great customer service. I love them dearly and they are the hardest working family I know so please, Natchez, just be aware of what’s going on around you.

The world is not like it used to be. Too many people want the government to take care of them instead of working. I was raised in a time where people worked for everything they had. We accepted it and did not look for a handout. We need to get back to that way of life.
