Miss-Lou residents are breathing a sigh of relief this morning as the remnants of Hurricane Ike speed north into Canada.

Thankfully, officials’ fear that the category 2 hurricane would threaten the area with high winds and another round of power outages, never came to fruition.

As the storm clouds break, let’s review some of the good news that happened last week:

4 Guy Wimberly was named a National Merit semi-finalist last week. The announcement is good for the Natchez High senior, but even better for Natchez, because Wimberly said he hopes to come back to Natchez after college and teach math.

4 The City of Vidalia named one of the city’s convention center rooms in memory of Delane Thornhill. Family, residents and town officials remembered the former police chief as a strict but fair leader during this week’s board of aldermen meeting.

4 Thanks to the Adams County Board of Supervisors, county residents now have a way of easing the expense of prescriptions. Supervisor Darryl Grennell, in conjunction with the National Association of Counties, helped institute a prescription drug card program that could help save residents as much as 23 percent on their prescription expenses.

4 Antiques experts from across the country converged in Natchez to celebrate the Pilgrimage Garden Club’s 31st annual Antiques Forum. Forum participants filled up hotel rooms, restaurants and shops during the revived 3-day event.

4 Natchez joined the heritage tourism band wagon Monday night. A group of 50 people discussed a myriad of historical sites that help tell the story of Natchez. Monday night’s meeting begins to help the area capitalize on this recently popular aspect of the tourism market.

As we look to partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, we know that the week will be filled with good news.
