Cathedral Lady Wave can’t overcome late deficit

NATCHEZ — Bogue Chitto allowed five runs in the first inning and went scoreless for two frames against Cathedral on Tuesday.
But the Lady Bobcats’ come-from-behind performance helped them steal the game, a 13-12, Region 4-1A win.
Bogue Chitto scored one run in the third and three in the fifth before taking a sixth-inning lead in what had looked to be an early blowout.
Darcy Miller hit a double and scored on a Josie Porter single in the third, and the two, along with triple-hitting Amanda Owens, all reached home in the fifth.
In the sixth, Chris May singled to third and Toy Smith singled to the pitcher, Rachel Smilo. Adrienne Wallace singled to left field, and Kelli Howard singled to right-center to score May. Smilo walked in Smith, and Owen’s single to left-center scored Wallace and Howard to put the Lady Cats up, 10-7.
But the Lady Green Wave were not about to go quietly.
Elizabeth Blackwell singled to right and Smilo singled to right-center. Betsy Daggett singled to pitcher Blaine Myers, and May Durkin’s single to short scored Blackwell. Ginny Daggett hit one to right-center to score Smilo, and Betsy Daggett scored on an error to tie the game.
In the seventh, however, the Lady Cats were determined, scoring three more runs off four hits, including a double by Howard, to put them back up, 13-10.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Cathedral scored two more, including a triple by Blackwell, but Betsy Daggett’s pop out with a runner on base sealed the deal.
“They battled back all the way to the end,” said Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell. “We just couldn’t get that last hit when we needed it.”
Cathedral struck hard early as the entire lineup got on base in the inning. They scored five runs on eight hits, and left just two on base in the first frame.
The first inning, that was just Natchez-Cathedral doing their job,” said Bogue Chitto coach Scott Leggett. “I knew they were a good-hitting team. I had a chance to go watch them the other day play West Lincoln, and they out-hit them, so I knew coming into today that it was going to be a battle.”
Leggett said the reason his Lady Cats won the 2007 state championship was because of the drive displayed Tuesday night.
“The girls always have it in them,” he said. “What you just saw tonight at the end, the fight, the will to win, that’s the way they played last year. They hadn’t lost that, and it’s something they’ve got going for them.”
Blackwell was disappointed in the loss, he said, but very proud of his team’s composure under pressure.
Both teams’ ability to battle back, he said, made it “a heck of a ballgame.
“They probably handled it a lot better than I did,” he said. “I was very nervous. They were nervous too, but they handled it.”
Cathedral (6-4) is still in the running for the playoffs, taking on West Lincoln for two more district contests. The first will be played Thursday in Natchez, and the second will be held in West Lincoln on Sept. 25.
Blackwell said if the Lady Green Wave win both of those games by at least two points, they will be in the playoffs.
Bogue Chitto (11-7, 12-1) will take on St. Aloysius in a district match up Thursday.
I’m just disappointed that we waited around until the last innings, but it’s been like that ever since the beginning of the year,” Leggett said. “We’re not hitting as consistently, but they’re getting the job done. Defensively they made mistakes here and there, but if we can come back and start hitting the way we hit in the fifth and sixth innings the whole game, we’ll be fine.”
