NATCHEZ — For the first time this season, the Trinity Episcopal Saints were involved in a close game into the third quarter. However, that didn’t last long.

What was a seven-point game with 8:54 to go in the third quarter turned into another convincing win for the Saints as they scored 21 unanswered points to take a 42-14 win over the Prairie View Academy Spartans in District 3-AA action Friday night.

Prairie View quarterback Hunter Smith threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Allen Spires that made the score 21-14 in favor of Trinity. But that would be as close as the Spartans would get.

Brandon Daggs caught two touchdown passes later that quarter, one from R.J. Fleming that went 49 yards with 6:02 to go and the other a 12-yard pass from Givonni Dent as the quarter came to an end. Kent King then scored on a 1-yard run with 7:29 to go in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

This was a most unusual game as far as offensive statistics were concerned for Trinity (5-0, 2-0). Despite the 28-point win, the Saints had 32 total carries for just 55 yards (164 gained, 109 lost) and they turned the ball over three times — something head coach David King hoped his team would have cut down on by now.

The Saints’ defense held Prairie View (0-5, 0-2) to just 16 total yards rushing on 24 carries and 38 yards of total offense while forcing two turnovers and making the Spartans punt seven times.

Fleming completed four of eight passes for 102 yards and added 13 carries for 65 yards. Wells Middleton had five carries for 52 yards and a touchdown as well as two catches for 54 yards.

Prairie View’s other touchdown occurred early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Cody King.
